Afghanistan Knocked off, Sri Lanka Progress with 6-Wicket Victory.

 

Abu Dhabi, September 18, 2025 -In a critical Group B match, Sri Lanka played a very good game to defeat Afghanistan by 6 wickets, as a result of which it will comfortably transfer to the Super 4. Afghanistan also failed to withstand the chase by Sri Lanka despite a late resurgence by Mohammad Nabi.

Toss & Innings Decision

Afghanistan was lucky to win the toss and decided to bat first trying to make a difficult target at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. 

Afghanistan’s Batting

Afghanistan dealt with 169/8 within 20 overs. The innings was highlighted by a fireworks show by Mohammad Nabi who hit 60 in only 22 balls and hit five sixes in one of the final overs- rekindling the hopes that had faltered in the middle part. 

Sri Lanka’s Chase

The chase was easily made light of by Sri Lanka. The star of the game was Kusal Mendis, who not only scored a knock that changed the game but also scored the innings. Sri Lanka clinched the victory by over half margin with the assistance of Kusal Perera among others.

It is a convincing win that helps Sri Lanka advance to the Super 4 stage. They will desire to gain momentum and confidence. 

It is based on the result of this match that Afghanistan are eliminated in the Asia Cup. They finish their tournament with moments of brilliance (such as Nabi batting), but the lack of consistency is an issue. 

In the case of Sri Lanka, it appears to cope with pressure situations better - which is beneficial in tight tournaments. In the case of Afghanistan, the emphasis will probably lie in the enhanced top-order stability and prevention of bowling leakage.
